The other band that really helped to popularise pirate-themed metal music is the one and only Alestorm, founded sometime in the mid-2000s. Still, I should probably add a large “ EXPLICIT LYRICS” warning for almost all of the music videos that I will be linking to here. I’m not sure if I’ve written about this genre before, but I thought that I’d talk briefly about pirate-themed heavy metal music today 🙂 Although the sub-genre has a history that stretches back to at least the 1980s, with the band Running Wild arguably founding it ( with classic-style 1980s metal that just happened to be about pirates), I thought that I’d focus more on modern examples of it because it has really become it’s own thing during the past decade or two.
